Type Locality and Naming

The naming section is located in the area from Haixingdi Village to Wanghutun, Wanghe Township southeast of Huangpu Town ~10 km southwest of Qianshan County, Anhui Province. Named by the Anhui Bureau of Geology in 1971.


Lithology and Thickness

Primarily purplish red muddy sandstone and sandstone with conglomerate and grayish white sandstone, containing calcareous concretions of varying shape. This formation is relatively persistent laterally, being ~1300 m thick.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

Conformable contact with the underlying Cretaceous Wanghe Fm (or called the Gaohebu Fm). [not yet in English Lexicon; but next older regional unit is the lower-Cretaceous Jiangzhen Fm]

Upper contact

Conformable contact with the overlying early Paleocene Wanghudun Fm.

Regional extent

It is mainly distributed in Qianshan and Huaining counties, southern Anhui, and a similar horizon may be exposed in Tongcheng County and Xiaochi Township of Taihu County.

Fossils

The vertebrates found in this formation include the lizards Changjiangosaurus huananensis and Anqingosaurus breviocephalus and the mammals Bemalambda sp., Plethorodon chienshanensis, Wanogle hodongensis, Chianshania qianghuaiensis, Anaptogale wanghoensis, Anictops tabiepedis, Cartictops canina, Astigale wanensis, Yantanglestes conexus and Anchilestes impolitus. In addition, Anhuichelys and Eoalligator recorded in the strata probably equivalent to this horizon at Dinghuawu, Xiaoshi Township, Huaining County, are found in this formation.

[Note: the conformable upper contact with the overlying early Paleocene Wanghudun Fm, which Wang et al. (2019) assign as Danian, would imply that the age is only earliest Danian.]
